Mareeba Junior Rugby League Treasurer Stephen Gear was named a National Rugby League Volunteer of the Year Finalist at their recent Community Heroes Awards in October.

The 2020 NRL Community Awards were held in mid-October and seek to honour the very best people in rugby league.

The unsung heroes, who give up their own time to grow the game, assist in the community and create assistance for communities in need.

Stephen has been involved in MJRL for five years initially as a coach for his son’s U7 team and most recently as treasurer, and was unfortunately unsuccessful in winning the Volunteer of The Year award.

Stephen was incredibly humbled and honoured when he discovered he was nominated for the award.

“I was very honoured to hear about my nomination at our club breakup where I was presented with some gifts for my nomination,” he said.

“I just do my job, I am the treasurer and I just help out where I can.

“It’s really not me it’s everyone in the club that gets behind and supports each other, I know that if something does go wrong someone else will jump in and help out.”

MJRL President Shaun Fincham spoke glowingly about Stephen’s impacts on the success of the club.

“It’s just Stephens’s character to do things because they need to be done not because he wants recognition,” he said.

“That’s one of the qualities that make him a very valuable committee member, if something needs doing he just does it he doesn’t do it for acknowledgement.

“What he does for this club is huge I don’t think he really realises what it is, he does a lot for this club and because of his involvement he has made this club better.”
