LOCAL Mareeba motorbike racer Liam Waters is set to be the only Far North Queensland participant in the upcoming Australian Superbike(ASBK) Series coming off some impressive performances last year.

After wrapping up the QLD F3 Road Racing Title in October 2020, Liam went on to compete and finishthird at the QLD 2Hr Road Race Endurance event in November.

To cap it all off, he was victorious at the Tasmanian Endurance roundfinishing off a successful year of racing for the young rider.

With ongoing restrictions, it is unlikely Liam will be able to race overseas in 2021, so he has now sethis sights on the ASBK Series looking to race in the Supersport 300class.

Liam’s father Damien Waters said that Liam will be competitive but not knowing some of the tracks puts him at a disadvantage.

“Initially there will be a bit of a learning curve and seeing if his bike is competitive, as a rider he can run at the top level in that class,” he said.

“He has the ability but there will be two tracks that he hasn’t been to before, so I don’t expect him to be finishing on top of the podium.

“At the moment there are about 30 riders in the field so our initial goal is to be in the top 10.”

Liam is looking forward to theSuperbike Series after his solid performances late last year.

“The Superbike Series is fiercely competitive with a lot of talented riders and teams involved,” he said.

“I am looking forward to getting back on the bike and the challenge of it all.”

The first round of the ASBK Series is set to kick off on Phillip Islandin Victoria on February 20 and 21.
