Mulungu Health Care Service recently held a new touch football competition in Mareeba – the Murri Touch Tournament.

The new tournament was created to bring together the various communities within Far North Queensland, the event aimed to promote the Deadly Choices message of; making healthy choices and to encourage regular physical activity.

There were 14 teams entered with teams traveling all the way from Innisfail and people over the age of 55 were seen in some of the teams.

Queensland Cowboys rugby league player Ray Thompson is a ‘deadly choices’ ambassador and was present on the day.

Being its inaugural year the event was a huge success with over 136 participants and 300 community members attending.

Mulungu Health Care Service Corporate Services Manager Samanthia Dooley was ecstatic about the first year.

“The event went off with a bang with the amount of participants we had,” she said.

“All participants have to have had their health checked in the past 12 months to participate.

“This helps to inspire young men and women to take control of their own health and inspire others to do the same.”

The event will be hosted in Mareeba again next year and is aimed to be bigger and better than this year.

Mulungu Health Care Services would like to thank the numerous volunteers that helped make the event a success; Mareeba Touch Association, First Aid Officers the Caterers and the teams that travelled to participate in the Tournament.
