Srhoj set to grow football in FNQ
former Mareeba United Football Club coach Alex Srhoj named the Zone Administrator of FNQ Football.
THE Srhoj surname is synonymous with football in Far North Queensland, and former Mareeba United Football Club coach Alex Srhoj has further etched the name in FNQ football’s folklore after recently being named the Zone Administrator of FNQ Football.
Srhoj’s resume is an impressive one, with a coaching career that spans multiple decades in the north and experience in administration roles such as the Football Manager for the FNQ Bulls in the former Queensland Soccer League.
Srhoj said being appointed as Zone Administrator was an enormous honour.
“It’s very humbling to be given the opportunity,” he said.
“I think it means a little more being born and bred up here – I’ve had a lot of positive responses and well wishes and I hope I can live up to all the expectations.”
Srhoj said becoming Zone Administrator is a position he always envisioned taking up.
“I actually applied for the position back in 2015; however I was unsuccessful on that occasion,” he said.
“In saying that I still stayed involved with the sport and this time around they approached me and for me it’s about putting my head down and bum up.
“Ultimately my goal for the rest of this year is to finish 2019 on a positive note and try and finish it to a point where the parents and players can’t wait for 2020.”
Srhoj said he will start looking to 2020 once the season finishes with help of the club.
“There’s a lot of smart football brains in the area and hopefully we can put together a model up here that’s stable, consistent and enjoyable most of all,” he said.
“We want to put a system in place that supports the six yearolds right up until the seniors.
“In addition, ladies football is of great importance, it’s an avenue in FNQ that I feel can really improve and I look forward to putting things in place to foster its growth.”
Srhoj said he would like to thank his family and partner Aly for providing him with the support to take this step and fulfil his dream of becoming Zone Administrator.
“The level of support I have received is overwhelming,” he said.
“That’s both from current people involved with football in FNQ and old heads who have been involved with the game for many years – so I am pretty excited and nervous at the same time and hopefully I can tick all the boxes.”
FNQ Football and Football Queensland are equally excited with Srhoj’s appointment.
“We are looking forward to Alex taking on what will be a challenging but rewarding role. FNQ Football knows he will be able to hit the ground running and ensure we have a great end to the season and an enjoyable finals series,” said FNQ Football Chairman Leo Ward.
FQ Chief Executive Officer Richard Griffiths said “I have met Alex and he is certainly knowledgeable and passionate about the sport. FQ will be working closely with the FNQ Board and Alex to ensure the best possible delivery of football in the region.”
