Staff celebrate decades of service
WHEN long service leave comes around four times in a career, it’s definitely a feat worth celebrating.

Last week Mareeba Shire Council marked the dedication of its long-serving employees at the annual staff function, presenting certificates of service to those council workers who had been with the organisation for 20 years or more.
One staff member in particular had clocked an impressive 43 years at council.
Of its 219 employees, 41 staff members – or 20% – have been with the organisation for 20 years or more, 15 staff members had reached over 30 years of service, and the average length of service across all staff was 10.4 years.
Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin praised the strong sense of loyalty among staff and highlighted the many career opportunities available at council.
“Our staff are an active part of the shire’s community and take great pride in their work,” she said.
“There are many opportunities for professional development, with several long-term employees starting as trainees and working their way up through the ranks.”
The long-serving staff span a wide range of departments including finance, libraries, fleet, the soil lab, plumbing, and heavy plant operations.
“Whether our staff are born and bred in Mareeba Shire or have relocated from other parts of Australia to enjoy life in our incredible region, Mareeba Shire Council is a great place to be,” Mayor Toppin said.
