Successful field day
WET Tropics Soil Care Group (WETS) has conducted a successful field day at Evan’s cattle grazing property in Kairi.

The event was organised to demonstrate the Cyclone Multi-task trailer sprayer that the WETS group has been trialling for the past 18 months through a grant from Terrain NRM, that has allowed the use of the sprayer and continued professional laboratory soil testing to be carried out during the trials.
“Trials are being undertaken to assess improvements in soil biology and biodiversity over a four-year period,” WETS president Kelli Evans said.
“It is still early days in the trial period, however the team is very optimistic with some promising results.
“This good hands-on working event gave everyone a first-hand chance to inspect the inputs and take part in the preparation of the brew.”
Special interest centred on adding the live biology. During the spraying a sample of the liquid was taken and displayed through the microscope onto a screen for all to see the activity of the lively microbiology.
The sprayer system mixes and applies liquid and dry fertilisers, minerals, compost and biology in a single pass – even in tight orchard spaces.
Further tests were carried out on the day with a refractometer testing the soil moisture retention and compaction which also showed improvement.
Wet Tropic Soil Care (WETS) group is a peer-to-peer farming group who share ideas and support to farmers who would like more information and know how on soil improvement.
Members of the group are located from Millaa Millaa to Dimbulah, Mt Garnet to Mossman.
