Mareeba Shire Council wants feedback on whether to retain or remove the pedestrian safety installations which were installed in 2024, aimed at providing pedestrians and cyclists with a safer route.

The “Lighter, Affordable, Effective” project was aimed at trialling affordable and timely solutions compared to traditional, higher-cost upgrades, with the intent that these treatments could be implemented, modified, replaced or removed quickly, easily and at low cost, if required.

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said that while the changes at most of the five sites had been well received, community response to the Ceola Drive installations had been mixed.

“If you live in the area or walk or cycle along Ceola Drive, now is the time to have your say on whether the safety installations should be kept or removed,” she said.

She said traffic monitoring had shown a reduction in drivers exceeding the speed limit shortly after the installations were put in place.

“Drivers exceeding the speed limit has been an issue on Ceola Drive for a number of years,” Mayor Toppin said.

“Councillors are weighing the reduction in traffic speed against the community’s response, and we are genuinely seeking community input to help guide council’s decision-making.”.

Anyone who wishes to have a say can complete the short survey on council’s website by Sunday, 19 October.
