Tablelands to mark VP Day
THE 81st anniversary of Victory in the Pacific and the end of the World War II will be marked at a commemorative service to be held at Rocky Creek War Memorial Park on 15 August.
The service, held by Tablelands Regional Council will include the unveiling of new individual and military unit plaques honouring service personnel connected to the Atherton Tablelands.
During World War II, the Tablelands became the largest military base in Australia. Rocky Creek was the site of the largest military hospital in the Southern Hemisphere, and the park sits on the former site of the laundry and medical stores for the 2/2nd Australian General Hospital.
The day will start with a family commemoration from 10am for those unveiling new plaques, followed by the dedication and unveiling of individual plaques from 11.15am.
From midday, the Tolga Museum and Historical Society will run a sausage sizzle, and the Tablelands Brass Band will play 1940s swing music. The Memorial Service runs from 1pm-2pm.
“The Tablelands played a critical role in Australia’s wartime history, and Rocky Creek stands as a reminder of that service and sacrifice. On behalf of council, I encourage the community to join us in honouring those who served,” TRC Acting Mayor Dave Bilney said.
Motorists are advised that the speed limit on the Kennedy Highway near the memorial park entrance will drop to 60km/h from 8.30am to 12.30pm on the day.
Limited camping is available at the adjoining RV rest area for self- contained vehicles, though space will be reduced to allow for event parking.
