Towns set to get merry and festive
MAREEBA and Atherton will this week come alive with the spirit and music of the festive season, with both towns hosting the annual Carols by Candlelight this Friday and Saturday.
The Merry Mareeba event, which is organised and staged by Rotary Mareeba, will be held again in Byrnes Street on Friday night to allow more people to attend and enjoy the popular annual Christmas community get together.
The entertainment on the main stage will begin at 6.30pm, but before that locals can enjoy strolling around the Christmas markets, shopping and food from various outlets.
From 6.30pm, the live entertainment kicks off, with some of the best local musical and dance talent around.
Cafes will stay open late, and by keeping the celebrations in the CBD, some businesses will also stay open longer to give everyone the chance to explore for Christmas gifts.
Of course, one of the highlights of the night will be the arrival of Santa, Mrs Claus and elves who will engage with the audience.
Atherton will get its turn on Saturday night, with Carols by Candlelight to be staged at Merriland Hall along with other festive activities.
This year’s celebration brings together three festive favourites – the Gingerbread House Competition from 5.30pm-7.30pm; the Christmas Night Market from 4.30pm-8.30pm; and then the Carols from 6pm-8pm.
An array of food vans will be on site.
