Ukelele festival goes retro

IN a step back in time, this year’s Reef, Rainforest and Rivers (RRR) Uke FEST will be all about the swinging 60s when the three-day event kicks off in August.

The third annual festival, on 7-9 August at the Kydobi Country Park near Biboohra, will see ukulele players from across the north converge to perform and learn over three days.

Organiser Dale Burns said this year’s festival was retro themed and everyone was encouraged to dress the part.

The event will feature three workshops by special guest artists, Cathy and Angie - The Wild Women of Anywhere Beach - a bass workshop by Cliff, and a drumming workshop by Brett.

“There will be performances from several uke groups, wristband concerts, walk-ups and poets’ breakfast, a concert by our guest artists and a cocktail hour with entertainment on Sunday,” Dale said.

“Each day will finish with a jam session around the campfire.”

Camping is available from 6-10 August, with powered and unpowered sites, full facilities and a well-equipped camp kitchen. There will also be a food van on site all weekend. Dale said it would be wise to book a spot early.

“The RRR Ukefest is one of the highlights of the year for Uke Groups to get together and do what we love best, play ukulele and sing together,” he said.

“It is important for us to meet up with like-minded people, have fun and be happy. And there’s opportunities for groups and solo players to perform.

“It’s suitable for all skill levels, so grab a ukulele and join in.”
