Mareeba Shire Council awarded JR Pipelines Pty Ltd a contract to replace the asbestos cement water main on Main Street/Mulligan Highway, between Clacherty Street and Brown Street, with a ductile iron, cement-lined pipe.

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said the work was an important investment in improving the reliability of the town’s non-potable water supply network.

“Replacing ageing water mains helps ensure a more reliable water supply for residents and businesses while reducing the risk of future maintenance issues and water service disruptions, so it’s a real positive for the community,” she said.

The work follows the successful upgrade of the Mt Molloy water reservoir earlier this year.

Funded by the council’s Water Depreciation Reserve, the Mt Molloy water main project is expected to be complete by June 2027.

Information on construction and changed traffic schedules will be provided closer to the start of the works.
