Upping the Amphi

FAR North Queenslanders are being invited to share highlights and memories of the Kuranda Amphitheatre over the past 50 years in a campaign designed to bring the venue back into the spotlight.

The Kuranda Amphitheatre has been the site for legendary concerts, festivals and major moments for five decades.
The Kuranda Amphitheatre has been the site for legendary concerts, festivals and major moments for five decades.

“There’s nearly 50 years of stories out there,” Kuranda Amphitheatre Society president Brioni McGrath, said.

“People who saw their favourite band, met their future partner, performed on stage or had a night they’ll never forget – we’d love to hear those stories.”

The “Amplify the Amphi” campaign aims to keep the tropical rainforest venue alive and accessible for the future.

Together with a call-out to local radio stations to host a “What’s Your Amphi Story?” listener call-in segment, the society will be holding a free community celebration on Thursday to celebrate AusArt Day, a national day of giving for arts and culture.

The event will feature live music, circus arts and local comedy from 5.30pm to 9pm at the Kuranda Amphitheatre, and kicks off a fundraiser to reach $20,000 towards a permanent in-house sound system.

The system would reduce the cost of hiring equipment and make it easier to stage affordable live music, festivals, theatre and community events, Ms McGrath said.

“We’re not just raising money for sound equipment. We’re investing in the future of a place that belongs to the community. We want the Amphi to be somewhere people are making new memories, not just talking about old ones,” she said.

“As a grassroots, non-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers, investing in permanent infrastructure means more money can go directly towards local artists and community programs.”

Donations to the Amplify the Amphi campaign can be made at https://www.kurandaamphitheatre.org/donate. Donations over $2 are tax-deductible.
