Assistant Minister for Northern Australia Senator Nita Green announced the shire would receive $5 million to upgrade the Granite Creek crossing on Springmount Road, and $4.9 million to reduce stormwater flooding in Byrnes Street.

Businesses on the western side of the main street have experienced significant flooding during high rainfall events which will be tackled by major stormwater improvements next year.

Mayor Angela Toppin, who told how she had once not been able to access her vehicle parked near the European Deli for two hours due to flash flooding, said the works would significantly reduce the amount of water flowing into the street during heavy downpours.

“It will take stormwater from the southern end of Byrnes Street, collecting the water opposite the Coles complex and swinging it west underneath Rankin Street which will divert the water into the Bicentennial Lakes network,” she said.

Mareeba Shire Councill will have to match the $4.9 million funding to carry out the project.

The upgrade to the Granite Creek Crossing on Springmount Road will involve the construction of a new 40-metre bridge and the realignment of approaches.

The project will also remove a hazardous sharp curve.

Senator Green said the $5 million investment for the project would deliver a significant improvement for road users in the area.

“Council has identified this section of road as a priority, so I’m proud to be able to deliver this great news that will be delivering a $5 million boost to ensure this project happens,” she said.

Mayor Toppin said the crossing upgrade was badly needed.

“The Granite Creek crossing on Springmount Road has been a longstanding challenge for our community, with flooding occurring several times every wet season and forcing motorists to take a 28km detour,” she said.

“This project will provide a more reliable crossing, reduce disruptions, improve safety and will ensure residents, businesses and emergency services will have access throughout the year.

“Mareeba Shire Council is grateful to receive this funding, and we look forward to delivering this important infrastructure upgrade.”
