Women through to prelim final
THE Atherton Roosters Women are through to the preliminary final following a strong win over Southern Suburbs at the weekend, while the Roosters men took a 34-4 beating. Meanwhile, the Mareeba Gladiators celebrated an emphatic 50-18 win over the Yarrabah Seahawks.
ROOSTERS WOMEN vs SUBURBS
THE Roosters Women were simply too good for their opposition when they managed a 30-4 win last Friday night.
After Suburbs scored in the sixth minute, the Roosters went on to score six unanswered tries. Following a first half double from centre Leitaan Davey, the Roosters went into halftime with a 8-4 lead.
The Roosters ran away with the game in the second half, which saw a hattrick from second rower Lexeen Mathieson and a try from hooker Kimberley Bryant.
The Roosters will now face up against the Kangaroo Women in a preliminary final this Friday night from 7.10pm at Jones Park, with the winner advancing to the Grand Final on 8 August against the Ivanhoe Maidens.
ROOSTERS vs BROTHERS
IT was a tough day out for Atherton when they lost 34-4 against Cairns Brothers at the weekend.
The Roosters only try came from lock Pou Matatahi Talitonu, while Brothers’ centre Isaiah Wigness scored four tries and winger Joseph Pearson claimed a hattrick.
The Reserve Grade also lost (42-24), while the Under 19s managed a 22-14 win.
This weekend, the Roosters will host the Innisfail Leprechauns, where the club will be hosting a special celebration of the former Malanda Pioneer Football Club (1919-1980).
The Under 19s will get things underway from 2pm, followed by Reserve Grade at 3.30pm before the A Grade take to the field at 6pm, donning retro Malanda jerseys.
GLADIATORS vs SEAHAWKS
IT was nothing short of a heated battle in the heart of Yarrabah when the Gladiators took the home side down 50-18.
The game saw a Mareeba player and two from Yarrabah get sent to the sin bin, while another player from the home side was sent off altogether.
Tries for Mareeba came from centres Emmanuel Mukindi and Leslie Bassani, winger Bronson Ryan, forward Reece Dally, and hooker Bailey Aldridge, as well as a double from prop Caleb Dally.
Fullback Ty Grogan converted 7/8 tries and kicked two penalty goals, earning himself 18 points for the game.
The Reserve Grade weren’t as fortunate, taking a 52-20 loss, nor were the Under 19s, who lost 40-22.
This weekend, the Gladiators will host the Ivanhoe Knights at Davies Park, Mareeba. The Under 19s will kick things off at 3pm, followed by Reserve Grade at 4.30pm, and A Grade at 6pm.
