Mareeba Shire Mayor Angela Toppin said residents would have noticed the works, as well as the new footpaths and safer pedestrian access for the community.

“It is fantastic to see so much happening in town at the moment, with many long-term projects being implemented,” she said.

The 2025-26 Water Main Replacement project was progressing well, with construction now completed on Kenneally Road and surrounding streets to upgrade water mains.

Moving further north, works on the Walsh Street/Rankin Street traffic and pedestrian safety project were underway, with the section at Constance Street near the Hastie Street intersection nearly completed in the first stage of the stormwater drainage upgrade.

The team was now focusing on the next section on the corner of Rankin Street and Walsh Street which would see the roundabout reconfigured, a new pedestrian crossing established between Coles and K-Hub, and new lighting and landscaping due to be completed later this year.

In recent months, crews along Constance Street have been undertaking a major project to upgrade the sewer main along the entire length of the street, which will be completed in December.

Another project in the works is the Lloyd Street sewer network reconfiguration to address the collapse of the sewer during Cyclone Jasper. This project is scheduled for completion in June 2027.

The Atherton Street sewer pump station upgrade works have recently begun and will help move wastewater to the treatment plant to meet current and future capacity for dwellings. It is expected to be completed by early 2027.

Works are also due to begin soon on the missing link of footpath on the western side of Constance Street between the Theatre Hall and just past Hort Street.

Member for Cook David Kempton said it was positive to see the essential upgrades progressing in Mareeba, from water and sewer improvements to safer pedestrian access.

“These projects will not only enhance the day-to-day lives of residents but also support the town’s growth for years to come,” he said.

Mayor Toppin thanked the community for “its patience and understanding during these essential upgrades” and acknowledged the funding assistance from both the Federal and State governments which had made the improvements possible.
