Youngster hits big stage
A YOUNG local is riding high after he was part of a silver-medal-winning hockey team at a national tournament recently.

Jacob Berry-Porter represented his state in one of two Queensland teams at the 2025 Hockey Australia U14 Championships, where his side narrowly lost 2-0 in an epic grand final match against Western Australia.
It was Berry-Porter’s first experience in a grand final, and it was on a national stage in Brisbane.
“It’s a pretty cool feeling, it’s hard to imagine that I was part of that,” the 14-year-old from Atherton said.
“It was pretty scary and everything felt numb, but it was a good experience. It was fun to be in the team and meet new people.”
The youngster made his way to the national event after first being selected in the regional (Cairns) team and was then picked for the Queensland Sabers at a state trial in Rockhampton.
