Your say on insurance

HOMEOWNERS, landlords, strata communities and business owners are encouraged to do a 5-10 minute survey on insurance affordability to determine if costs have increased, decreased or remained the same in the Far North.

Regional Development Australia (RDA) Tropical North Board Chair Hurriyet Babacan said the survey would build on the findings of the inaugural 2025 survey which contributed to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s monitoring of the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool.

“Now that we have a baseline understanding of insurance affordability it is important to monitor whether insurance conditions are benefitting or hindering property and business owners,” she said.

“Last year’s survey across 21 local government areas in Far North Queensland found most respondents faced increases in insurance premiums since the Cyclone Reinsurance Pool commenced in 2023.

“High excess levels were also a concern with many above $2500 and some exceeding $5000.

“The more people we get to participate in the survey, the more weight RDA Tropical North has in advocating for improved insurance affordability as well as stronger measures to boost insurer participation and market competition.

“This year, surveys are being undertaken across Northern Australia which will further strengthen the understanding of how insurance plays a significant barrier to de-risking investment in emerging industries in remote and regional areas.”

The survey is anonymous and takes 5-10 minutes with responses needed by close of business on 9 October. Survey link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/ZBJ3QMM
